Centrifuge tubes that arrive in a rack: why it saves more than time
15 mL and 50 mL tubes are some of the most handled items in any lab. Here is what to know about them, and why rack-packed tubes make the bench calmer.
Conical centrifuge tubes do a lot of quiet work. They hold cell suspensions, collect pellets, store reagents and travel between the bench, the centrifuge and the fridge many times a day. Small details in how they are made and packed add up.
What a centrifuge tube is built for
The conical bottom guides solids into a tight pellet, so you can pour or pipette off the liquid above it. Graduations on the side let you read volumes quickly, and a white writing area keeps your labels readable. MODMAT 15 mL and 50 mL tubes are made of high-grade polypropylene with good optical clarity and resistance to many chemicals at room temperature, and they are autoclavable from −80 °C to 121 °C.
Good to know before you spin
- Think in RCF, not just RPM. The force on your sample depends on rotor size. Relative centrifugal force (× g) is the number to compare between centrifuges.
- Always balance. Place tubes of equal weight directly opposite each other.
- Choose the bottom you need. Conical bottoms are best for pellets; self-standing tubes stay upright on the bench without a rack.
- Protect light-sensitive samples. Amber tubes block much of the light that can degrade some reagents.
Fun fact
A centrifuge at only a few thousand RPM can push a sample with a force thousands of times stronger than gravity. That is why the tube wall, the cap and the plastic grade matter as much as the volume printed on the side.
Why rack-packed tubes help
